The Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland and England as a waterfowl and game dog in the 19th Century. Hunters in the northern areas needed a large strong dog that had intelligence, an affinity for the water, the will to work and a soft mouth for retrieving. The Golden Retriever was developed by cross breeding Tweed Water Spaniels, Newfoundlands, and Irish Setters for those purposes.
The Golden Retriever is symmetrical in appearance. It is a powerful, eager, and active dog with a kindly expression. It is alert, cheerful, and self-confident. The Golden Retriever "likes everyone" and so is not usually used for guarding. However, it is a very popular guide dog for the disabled. The breed is gentle, sensitive, responsive, and good with older children. I recommend that you wait until your children are school age as our breed is medium sized and can easily knock over a toddler young child.
