Enjoying off-lead areas

This page is designed to provide some general information and tips about responsible use of off-lead areas.

  • Each council has different rules that apply to off-lead areas, so it’s worth checking the details on the council website for the park or beach you’re planning on visiting. To help out, we have provided links to local councils under ‘More Information’ on each page.
  • Generally, dogs are allowed off-lead in designated off-lead areas provided that they are under effective control. Effective control means that you can control your dog with voice command and that you can see your dog.
  • Many councils specify that dogs must be on-lead (even in a designated off-lead area) in the vicinity of a BBQ or playground area, on shared bike/pedestrian paths, or when the area is being used for organised sporting events.
  • You should always carry a lead with you, and be prepared and able to put your dog on the lead if required.
  • Often dog-friendly areas are used for multiple purposes by a range of people (with and without dogs), so it’s important to be mindful of others. Do not allow your dog to worry or threaten any person or animal.
  • Carry plastic bags at all times (often they are provided by councils at the entrance to dog-friendly parks) and scoop the poop!
  • Off-lead areas are a great place for dogs to socialise with other dogs. Make sure you keep a close eye on your dog’s interactions with others. Be ready to intervene if your dog is bullying or annoying another dog, or if your dog appears intimidated or overwhelmed by another.
